Gustafson Brothers expands by adapting to demand and focusing on continual training
Published in Automotive Service Councils on California monthly publication - August 2012

One of the largest independently owned mechanical repair and collision shops in Orange County, Gustafson Brothers, has steadily expanded its business over the past 40 years by adapting to changing needs and demands. "I was fresh out of high school when my brother, Frank, and I decided to turn our passion for fixing cars into a career," President John Gustafson said. "So in 1971 we opened Gustafson Brothers repair shop in Huntington Beach, specializing in Volkswagens, which were very popular in that era."

General Manager/Partner Stan Rogers, who joined the business in 1976, said, "We didn’t start out big. Our first location waJohn, Monte and Stan - Gustafson Bros Management Teams in an old surf shop, and it’s taken 41 years of hard work, planning, and a little luck to get to where we are now." The shop began to do repair work on other makes when the brothers saw a need arise, Gustafson said. "Sport compacts like Nissan Sentras and Honda Civics started getting popular with the kids, so we began working on them, too."

In the early 1980s, Frank Gustafson decided he wanted a change of scenery, so his brother and Rogers helped him open Brothers Auto Body in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Gustafson Brothers was forced to relocate — to a larger building that had been an oil storage facility — when its original location was taken over by the city water department.

Rogers said repair work was done outdoors for about 10 years while "we covered the mechanical area and bays, demolished the old building and built a new building over everything. And we never lost one day’s work."

Gustafson saw a need to offer collision services, so a portion of the repair shop was designated for that purpose while a stand alone body shop was built. "We’ve always tried to respond to whatever our customers need, so adding a collision shop, with two Team Blowtherm spray booths and PPG paint system, was a natural progression," Gustafson said.

Gustafson Brothers Automotive Repair, Huntington Beach CAToday, Gustafson Brothers is a one-stop mechanical service and collision repair facility, an AAA authorized repair shop, an ASE Gold Shield shop, and an ACDelco repair center, Rogers said.

"The only things we don’t do onsite are upholstery and stereo, but we have partners who we’ve worked with for years do that for us," Rogers said. Rogers said the body shop has been I-CAR Gold Class since 1992, and most team members.

Rogers said the body shop has been I-CAR Gold Class since 1992, and most team members are I-CAR platinum individuals. The shop has 28 lifts, including Rotary, Bend Pak, and Western, Car-O-Liner frame machines, a Hunter alignment machine, Pro- Cut on-car brake lathes, and AutoLogic, Mastertech, and AutoEnginuity scan tools, Rogers said.

"We also offer fuel injection cleaning, tire pressure monitoring system service with off-the-car sensor testing capabilities, refrigerant testing systems, specialty spark plug thread repairing tools, A/C repair and servicing, custom Flowmaster and Magnaflow exhaust installation, and we sell OEreplacement tires."

John Gustafson, certified ASE Master TechnicianAs the business grew, Gustafson said he began his ASE training, and he is now a certified ASE Master Technician, a Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Certified Instructor, a Continuing Education Insurance Instructor licensed by the State of California, and a certified I-CAR instructor. General Manager Monte Gaustad, who started at Gustafson Brothers in 1977 as a mechanic’s helper rebuilding engines and transmissions while going to school, is now an ASE-certified service advisor, ASE-certifiedmechanic, and an I-CAR certified instructor. Training is ongoing and on-site in the shop’s large classroom,

Gaustad said. "Training is done by our certified instructors and other industry educators," he said. "Plus we have off-site classes sponsored by vendors, colleges, and independents." The body shop has four I-CAR volunteer instructors on staff, Gaustad said, and holds weekly classes in its training center. "The body shop manages with Mitchell ABS and estimates with E-Claim and CCC systems," he said. Rogers said the mechanical division uses the FastTrak shop management system, which they helped develop. He said it is "one of the most, if not the most, progressive software in the industry.

"To build new business, Rogers said customers can participate in a 20-20 referral program, receiving one or more plastic cards they can use to refer others to the shop. "Not only does that referred guest receive a $20 discount on his first visit, we also send a $20 voucher to the giver when we send their card back to them," Gustafson said. "So they can cycle the card as many times as they want, and we’ll make as many as 10 cards per guest." Rogers said they are also using Mudlick Mail. "We have always relied on remarkable customer experiences and referrals, but we’re experimenting with Mudlick Mail," he said. "They send out cards through the post office with a pass-through phone number to track the calls."

The body shop has three DRP partners, Gaustad said, and "we’re looking for a fourth to utilize our capacity." The shop has both Hertz and Enterprise on-site for immediate rental placement depending on a DRP’s requirements, Rogers said. "We also have a shuttle, driven by our ambassador Ted Shiosaka," Rogers said. "Drivers are available six days a week and we’re also adding local mechanical and body shop pickup service."

In addition to growing Gustafson Brothers from two employees to more than 60, John Gustafson has been recognized with the Alumni Pillar of Achievement Award from Golden West College for his contributions to the automotive industry.
